These two photos are of a barbershop quartet that my grandfather, Joseph Rankin Allred, Sr. belonged to when he was a student at a junior college / military institute in Mt. Pleasant, NC in the early 1920s.  He is the tall one on the far left.  The school campus is now home to the Eastern Cabarrus Historical Society & Museum:  http://www.echsmuseum.org.  I have donated these photos to them.
He was born in 1903 and raised on Douglas St. in Greensboro, and died in 1978.  His father (my great-grandfather) R. L. Allred was a contractor, who built the Presbyterian Church of the Covenant building on Mendenhall Street near UNC-G.  My great-grandparents' graves are in Green Hill cemetery in downtown Greensboro.  Also my father's maternal grandparents (Jeffreys family) are there, too.
The friends of Green Hill cemetery offer tours from time to time.  Many noteworthy residents of Greensboro are buried there, plus the trees and shrubs are quite a collection in their own right.  A professional arborist has labelled them all, and I met him by accident one day.  He told me that the trees at Green Hill are one of the best collections on the east coast!  Very few people even know about it.
