Elizabeth was born August 17, 1747 in Orange County, NC. The land she was born and raised on became part of the newly formed Randolph County in 1779. Today, the land is located in the Patterson Grove Community near Franklinville, Randolph County, NC.

Clues such as estate records, land records and family stories lead us to believe Elizabeth's father, John, was married at least twice, although the names of his wives have not been documented. We believe Elizabeth may have been the oldest child of John's first wife, born shortly after the family came to North Carolina.

Elizabeth married William Horner (Oct 30, 1746 - Oct 12, 1824) around 1767 based on the birthdate of her first child. After the Revolution, William and Elizabeth moved their family to Jefferson County (now Hamblen County), Tennessee. They are buried at Bent Creek Church Cemetery, Whitesburg, Hamblen County, TN. (Directions: From Highway 11E in Whitesburg turn south on Hwy 113 (Silver City Road), go 0.8 miles and turn right on Stagecoach Road. The cemetery is 0.1 miles on the left.)

Creek next to his former survey which was formerly John Edmons. Adj: Elijah
Witt (2) 200 acres on Sinking Creek including the plantation formerly John

Nov. 10, 1784: NC Grant # 650 to Solomon Murphy, 150 acres on Sinking Creek,
adj. formerly John Edmonds now the property of William Horner.....

Aug. 7, 1786: William Horner of Caswell County in the state of Franklin late
part of North Carolina, yeoman, and Elizabeth his wife to Anthony Gott,
yeoman, two tracts containing 300 acres granted on Nov. 9, 1784 and Nov. 10,
1784. Cons.: 100 lbs NC money. Adj: Elijah Witt. Sig: William Horner.

2001 - Bety Horner Lala: I believe the following was the "old homeplace" in
Jefferson County...but apparently was Greene Co. when the purchase grant
took place. I don't think Wm. ever got any free land.

to a dogwood then E 80 poles to 2 dogwoods then N 58 degrees 40 poles to a
dogwood then S 88 poles to a poplar then E 40 poles to a stake then S 60
poles to a stake then S 73 degrees W 280 poles to the beginning as by plat
annexed....

Eva Russell, Whitesburg, Tn 1794: William Horner, Sr. bought land in
Jefferson County from James Lea and James Roddy surrounding his N. C. grant
of 1792. He at one time owned over 500 acres in the vicinity of Bent Creek
settlement.
